Should you become a truck driver
It's something that you've wanted to try for awhile, and it's crossed your mind. Unless you know a truck driver, the first thing you do is research how to get your CDL commercial Driver license. If you're willing to work for your CDL, I highly recommend Roehl, especially if home time is important to you, since truck driving in the beginning can involve going out for 4 weeks out at a time and being home 4 days a month.
Roehl has better than the usual home time. It didn't matter to me at first about the lack of home time, but if you love going home after work, then you better look well into the home time flexibility. If you want to go to school and pay for your CDL out of pocket, go ahead. You can save yourself a lot of OTR over the road time, if you don't like being gone for so long. I worked at a company and drove for them, to get my CDL.
Another thing is that many trucking jobs you get early on tend to start you off making low, and driving over the road, or only coming home on weekends. I do recommend trying driving a truck if you're ok with working sitting down for long periods of time, know how to stay safe and alert while driving. You need to avoid going into wrong turns with no easy way to turn around. It can pay well once you've finished your first year of truck driving.
The first year you are just learning the industry. I am just finishing 8 months of driving and I am going to make it a year.
Update:April 22, 2020, I still enjoy truck driving and I'd like to own my own truck one day. After you've gotten used to it, you almost never want to work any other job.
